In a political climate full of unrest and a global marketplace beaming with unprecedented technological advances, one thing is for sure:ย E-Commerce is evolving along with societal changes, consumer behaviours, and our very way of life. It’s simply changing all the time.

Top E-Commerce Web Design Trends for 2017

To keep up with the fast pace of change, web design professionals everywhere need to be constantly aware of what is current, outdated, and fresh on the horizon of cutting edge. The following four trends in e-commerce web design should be the most popular trending items that all professionals within the industry should be aware of in the new year:

Minimalism … sort of:

For years now, the idea of “less is better” has dominated the e-commerce web design landscape. The idea of artistic integrity and flashy attention grabbers in web page layout has simplified and more user-design elements. That trend appears ready to continue … sort of in 2017. Lately, the idea of semi-flat design appears to be gaining in popularity. Semi-flat uses subtle images and slight design additions to feature depth and visual appeal to an otherwise minimalist web design. More and more the field of web design is taking on some similarities from the fashion industry, where what’s old is new. It’s the circle of web design life.

Storytelling:

Consumers like to bond with the companies they do business with. They like to know that the company they buy from shares some background, history, or culture with them. They might like to share some form of social responsibility or maybe it’s a common passion. It could be literally anything that just speaks to people for some unknown reason. One way of bonding with your customers in this way is through storytelling. Don’t be afraid to use an “About Us” section on your website for a little more than an organisational chart with a contact form and mailing address. Tell the buying public who you are, what you are, and why you do it. Storytelling also provides your with a way of separating yourself from the herd of comparable products and services.

Cinemagraphs:

Video without the lag time is a win-win, and that’s what a cinema graph is. In case you don’t already know, this is usually a series of still images in an animated video format, perhaps a GIF. It acts as an animated clip and provides a similar level of visual appeal to the website without the lag time associated with including a video clip. Users will always prefer video and animations to large blocks of text, so you may as well make it quicker for them to get their video fix. Otherwise, if they have to wait for your brilliant production via long-lagging video, they’re likely to X off your screen and go elsewhere.

Originality:With

responsive web design justifiably taking hold of the industry, many websites have adopted similar designs because they simply know they will work well whether the user is on a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or VR headset. Just kidding on that last one, but stay tuned for the list of trends in 2018 … Anyway, one of the best ways to make a memorable impact with your users is by implementing some form of creativity or originality in your design. The previously mentioned concept of storytelling is one great way to accomplish this, but using customised images is another thing that gets your users’ attention. By taking the time to incorporate your personality into the design of images like navigation bars and drop-down menus to name just two, you’re showing the user that you’re doing more than just going through the motions.
